Don't go see the Exorcism of Emily Rose. I'm going on 21 hours of no sleep because of it.
I may be completely mistaken, or not totally informed on the issues, but idulge me in a 5 a.m. "the-world-is-fucked-three-ways-from-Sun
Why is it that the richest, most militarily inclined country in the world was not prepared to deal with poverty and anarchy in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?
I heard on the news that b/c Bush is playing sugar daddy to the U.S. Army in this narrow-minded quest for freedom and democracy in Iraq *ahem*OIL!!!*coughcoughwheeze*, domestic disaster relief funds were decreased substantially...so that the victims only got 1/6th of what they should have for relief funding.
And why is it that the wealthy, well-to-do rich Southerners, who were being put up in fancy New Orleans hotels with gourmet food and luxuious accomodations, were evacuated BEFORE the thousands of poor (and mostly black) people holed up, starved, and dying in the shit hole of that stadium? Tell me, where is the sense, no, the HUMANITY, in that?
Rioting, looting, illness, murder, woman & children abuse, stories of people who have not only lost homes and possessions and loved ones but will possibly lose even more in the weeks to come... poverty and anarchy. What a great example you're setting on a world level, George. This is what a peaceful, democratic society looks like, eh? Let them have fire arms, and see what happens. The law can't be feared when the citizens have as much weaponry as they do.
So when the tsunami hit and 3rd world countries perhaps did not have the means enough to deal with the damage by themselves, I can understand. The international community pitched in and did their bit to help save the world and advance their political images. But the RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD could not have the foresight to provide for this kind of thing, let alone respond adequately to it within the first few days of it happening? Come on now.
Why, after people are dead and dying, is the only thing major oil coroporations are concerned with is raising the price of gas?
I understand why the gas prices are higher; the hurricane knocked out all those oil refineries in the affected states. But you'd think (or at least hope!) that with all the money these corporations are making from our steady consumption of their product, they could be prompted to have a little compassion and HELP the victims, rather than profit from their loss!
The only story I've heard profiling a major corporation big-shot getting up off his ass and doing SOMETHING to help (because Lord knows he has the means to) has been about a Canadian. Well, good for him; it's nice to see that someone in the big-business community actually has their head out of their ass and actually gives two shits about those who are considerably less fortunate than us at the moment. The fact that he's a Canadian just gives us something to boast in terms of humanitarian efforts.
These people are broken. They are not picking up the pieces with resiliant faces like New York did; they have no enemy to turn their hurt and anger against. They are simply broken and have most likely lost faith in the current administration because "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" is sounding kinda hollow right now. They may have stood against Mother Nature united, but they fell divided in her wake (white, black, rich, poor). You didn't stand united with them, and the only enemy they're going to seek is you, George.
And if they don't...then God Help America. Because Bush sure as hell isn't going to.
You know what being a Canadian is like while the Bush administration reigns supreme? It's like being the best friend of the girl who has a jerkface boyfriend, and wondering what the hell she sees in him. Really, America: what DO you see in George W. Bush?
Whatever the case, my belief in God (NOT to be confused with religion) has been somewhat renewed by what I've seen tonight. But my faith in people has NOT been renewed by what I'm seeing in the newspapers.
